Introduction to Literature: A Journey Through the Ages (Grades 3-6)

A note from the Teacher:
“This course is called A Journey Through the Ages for more than one reason! Not only is it a sampling of great literature across time, but it’s also what I hope will be the beginning of each student’s lifelong journey in savoring Great Books. There is no better time than childhood to begin committing these excellent works to mind and to heart. We will study each work with special attention to virtue and beauty, using the tools of recitation, discussion, and expression—all through a biblical lens and in a warm, welcoming environment.”

About the Class
Class Overview
A Journey Through the Ages offers students in grades 3–6 an accessible, yet rich, introduction to the great works of Western literature. This course provides a chronological survey of key literary periods—from ancient mythology to modern poetry—through developmentally appropriate readings designed to foster wonder, discussion, and a deep love of words.
Beginning in ancient times with Greek myths, children will embark on a literary journey through the ages, studying one to two carefully selected works from each major historical period.
Among others, this includes selections such as Shakespearean scenes and sonnets for the Renaissance, an excerpt from Paradise Lost for the Early Modern Era, and Lewis Carroll and Emily Dickenson’s whimsical poems to represent the Victorian age. Each text has been thoughtfully chosen to reflect its time while offering rich themes for discussion and spiritual reflection.
This class won’t water down great works or their rich content. However, it will still meet students where they are as young learners. This introductory class will approach each text through engaging, developmentally appropriate activities like read-alouds and recitation, guided discussions, memory work, and creative activities. The goal is to help young learners experience and commit to heart the beauty of the language, while planting seeds of the enduring ideas that echo through great literature.
